Startup MENA was back to Alexandria once more in November during the GEW. This time for a Create48 Digital Hackathon & another cool GearUP workshop session. This time we were also hosted by our amazing partners the AAST.
International Facilitation, Training & diversified mentor-ship
To ensure the entrepreneurs got the maximum value out of Create48 we flew in, Global Startup Weekend facilitator Eric Brotto, Pitch Trainer & Venture Scout Partner Jakob Kistorb & Sara Leth Ottosen. In addition to them, we were blessed to have lots of mentors coming from both Cairo & Alexandria to spend a day with the entrepreneurs guiding them & giving them valuable insights. Mentors included Mohamed Ezz from Tennra, Yara Eid from Microsoft Egypt, Mahmoud Noaman from M3mal, Ahmed Bolica from Pimula, Radwa Shawky from Online Business Steps , Abdelrahman Omran from Midade, Sherief Selim from EMC & last but not least Muhammed Mansour from our dear partners RiseUP summit.
Great talents & lots of Fun
We started Create48 hackthon on Thursday the 19th with 130 talented student & entrepreneur and around 25 ideas pitched on the stage. Later that night the crowd voted for the best 15 ideas, the founders of those ideas started recruiting talents to form a team. Over the next two days the teams went through extensive training from our trainers Sara Leth Ottosen & Jakob Kistorp in addition to the valuable tips they got all the time from Eric Brotto. On the second day, the teams were assigned for a one on one mentor sessions with the awesome mentors. Although they were an intensive exhausting couple of days, we never failed to have fun dance & most importantly network.
Winners & cool Prizes
Pressure was everywhere in the last few hours, teams were putting their final touches on the pitches & getting ready to pitch their startups in front of the audience & the Judging panel. We had 4 awesome judges Dr. Wael El Desouki professor & head of Entrepreneurship center at AAST, Jakob Kistorp partner at Venture Scout, Mahmoud Noaman co-founder of M3mal co-working space & Yara Eid from Microsoft.
It was a very tough decision for the judges to pick just three winners, since everyone put on their best shows while pitching. However, the grand Prize of 2000 Euros given by Venture Scout went to Moody, 2nd Prize went to Peers, they won cool android phones given by our awesome sponsors GDG Alex, finally the third winner was Blood type . All winners also got extra cool prizes which is an incubation period at EdZone & 4000 worth prizes from Ed-Manage in addition to crowd-funding training from Tennra.
One of the things we love the most about Alexandria is its community. It has the most supportive entrepreneurs, co-working spaces & most importantly universities. Everyone is always welcomed there, & they are always trying to develop and give back to the community. We were lucky to get all the support we got from our hosts & sponsors AAST, EdZone & GDG Alexandria. In addition to the local community partners M3mal, icealex & Oventures who helped us in each possible way. We would have never been able to host such great events without them.
Also we would like to send special thanks to the great volunteers from Rise Society who has been of a great help to us through the four days, taking care of each details & providing support whenever needed.
